Emergency Callout
Most solar faults can wait for a scheduled visit. A handful cannot — and knowing the difference matters, because a solar system is electrical plant that keeps generating live DC voltage every daylight hour, whether or not the inverter is on. If your system is showing any of the warning signs below, isolate it if you can do so safely, and call us. Genuine emergencies jump our schedule, nationwide.
Call Immediately If You Have
- Burning smells — A burning smell from the inverter, attic, consumer unit or anywhere near solar equipment — hot electrics have a distinctive acrid smell, and it is never fine.
- Scorching or sparking — Visible scorching, melting, discolouration or sparking at the inverter, isolators, connectors or consumer unit.
- Tripping that won't clear — Breakers that trip and won't reset, or an RCD that trips repeatedly. A breaker that won't reset is doing its job — the fault is still live.
- Physical damage — Storm, wind or fire damage — loose or lifted panels, hanging cables, sheared fixings, impact damage. A lifted panel is both an electrical hazard and a projectile.
- Water ingress — Water ingress into the inverter, battery enclosure or any electrical equipment.
- Battery warnings — A battery fault alarm, unusual heat from the battery, or any swelling, hissing or chemical odour. Battery cells in distress escalate — treat every battery alarm as urgent.

What We Do on an Emergency Callout
Storm Damage — Document Everything, Touch Nothing
After every named storm, the same pattern lands in our inbox: lifted panels, sheared fixings, and water-damaged rooftop isolators. If your system has taken storm damage, three rules protect both your safety and your insurance claim:
- Document first — Photograph everything before anything is moved or repaired — from the ground, with zoom. Date-stamped photos are the backbone of the claim.
- No roofers on live DC — Don't let a general roofer remove or 'tidy up' panels. There is live DC on that roof in daylight regardless of what's switched off inside, and panel removal is electrical work under IS 10101:2020 — it needs a registered electrician with PV competence.
- Insurer early — Notify your insurer early. Most Irish home policies cover storm damage to solar as part of the buildings cover. Our make-safe report and repair quote are written specifically to support the claim.
Why the DC Side Is Different
Even with the inverter off and the AC breaker down, solar panels keep producing power in daylight — a domestic string can sit at several hundred volts DC, and DC arcs don’t self-extinguish the way AC arcs do. This is why solar electrical emergencies need a Safe Electric registered electrician with PV experience rather than a general electrician, and why our make-safe procedure always isolates to IS 10101:2020 before any work begins. It’s also why ‘my brother-in-law will look at it’ is the one suggestion we’ll always argue with.
