    The inverter is the heart of your solar system — every watt your panels produce passes through it, all day, every day, for decades. It is also, by a distance, the most common failure point in any solar installation. Panels routinely outlive their 25-year warranties; inverters work hard in hot attics and garages and typically need attention somewhere between years 8 and 15.

    A surprising share of ‘dead’ inverters aren’t dead at all. A tripped RCBO, a failed rooftop DC isolator, a firmware lockout, a Wi-Fi dongle that lost its network, or grid settings knocked out of range — all of these look like a failed inverter to the owner and all of them are fixed in a single visit. This is exactly why we insist on diagnosis before replacement: nobody should pay for a new inverter to fix a €90 isolator.

    Common Inverter Faults We Fix

    Error codes and red or flashing fault lights on every brand — we translate the code and fix the cause, rather than clearing it and hoping. An error code is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

    'Isolation fault', 'Riso low', 'ground fault' — the classic damp-Irish-morning trip, caused by moisture in DC connections. Traced with insulation testing, not left to 'dry out'.

    Grid over-voltage disconnects — increasingly common on rural single-phase connections where network voltage runs high. We check and adjust inverter settings within EN 50549 limits, and where the network voltage itself is the problem, we document it and escalate to ESB Networks on your behalf.

    Inverters restarting or shutting down at peak generation — often ventilation, derating or DC-side issues rather than terminal failure.

    No display, no lights, completely dead units — sometimes the inverter, surprisingly often the supply to it.

    My inverter brand has gone bust — can it still be replaced?

    Yes, and this is one of the most common jobs we do. Any string or hybrid inverter can be replaced with a compatible modern equivalent. The array doesn't care what badge is on the box, as long as the electrical design is done properly.

    How long does an inverter replacement take?

    Typically half a day on site once the replacement unit is confirmed and in stock. Warranty replacements depend on the manufacturer's RMA turnaround, which we manage and chase for you.

    What does a replacement inverter cost in Ireland?

    It depends on size and type — a small string inverter and a large hybrid unit are very different jobs. Our rates are published and every replacement is quoted fixed-price after diagnosis, so you'll have an exact figure before deciding.

    Is it worth upgrading to a hybrid inverter?

    If battery storage is on your horizon, often yes — replacing a failed string inverter with a hybrid unit now typically makes a later battery retrofit cheaper and cleaner. If a battery genuinely doesn't suit your usage, we'll tell you that too.

    Will my monitoring app keep working?

    Yes — we set up monitoring on the new unit and register it in your name, including recovering access where the old system was tied to a defunct installer's account.

    Probably not — that pattern usually points to grid over-voltage, ventilation or a DC-side issue. It's precisely the kind of fault where a proper diagnosis saves you the cost of an unnecessary replacement.
